Users Coming Off Slimming Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these drugs must be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural management.
